– Eskom debt has increased from R1 billion to approximately R3 billion,
– Midvaal debt has escalated from R860 million to approximately R3 billion,
– UIF liabilities have risen from R6 billion to R10 billion, while debtors have doubled from R6 billion to R12 billion.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana notes the worsening financial and governance failures reflected in a Special Council meeting held on 12 June 2026.
When the current Council came into office in November 2021, creditors such as Eskom at R1 billion and Midvaal at R860 million were already a major point of concern. These have now escalated to approximately R3 billion each. At the same time, UIF liabilities stood at R6 billion and have now increased to R10 billion, while debtor balances have risen from R6 billion to R12 billion.
During the meeting, it was noted that a report received in February 2025 and only tabled before Council on 10 June 2026 indicated that more than R300 million worth of municipal infrastructure has been destroyed, dilapidated, non-functional, or stolen.
There is also an item on the agenda seeking to justify the promulgated upper limits by almost 30%, which effectively rewards non-performance under ANC governance.
It was further noted that the Provincial Executive Representative relied on quoting legislation instead of exercising firm financial oversight as custodian of public funds.
The DA in Matlosana maintains that this continued pattern of decline reflects weak leadership and poor accountability. The 2021 administration will be remembered as one of the most ineffective periods of governance under the ANC.
It is time for change in Matlosana. Residents must register to vote and support the DA to remove the ANC from government and restore accountability and service delivery.
The DA will continue to put residents first and hold the municipality accountable.
