  • Brutal murder of elderly resident in Orkney highlights devastating impact of violent crime.
  • Our elderly deserve to live in safety and dignity, free from fear.
  • The DA calls for urgent investigation, swift arrests, and justice.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply shocked and saddened by reports of the alleged brutal murder of an elderly resident in Orkney.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased during this tragic and difficult time.

This horrific incident serves as a stark reminder that too many South Africans continue to live under the constant threat of violent crime. Communities are increasingly being subjected to criminality that shows little regard for human life, dignity, or the rule of law.

Particularly concerning is the vulnerability of elderly residents, who should be able to enjoy their retirement years in safety and peace. Instead, many are living with the fear of becoming victims of violent crime in their own homes and communities.

The DA calls on the South African Police Service to deploy all available resources to ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, and successfully prosecuted. The victim’s family deserves answers, and the community deserves justice.

Crime cannot become the accepted reality of daily life. Every resident has the constitutional right to safety and security, and government has a responsibility to ensure that criminals fear the consequences of their actions.

This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for stronger visible policing, better-resourced detective services, and a criminal justice system capable of delivering swift and meaningful consequences for violent offenders.

The DA believes that safer communities require a criminal justice system that works. Criminals must be caught, prosecuted, and convicted, while communities must be empowered to reclaim public spaces from criminal elements.

The DA will continue to stand alongside residents in the fight against crime and to advocate for safer communities where every person can live without fear.

Catch. Convict. Clean Up.
