– DA oversight prompted an investigation into sewer blockages linked to Fat, Oil and Grease,

– Municipal sewer infrastructure failures contributing to ongoing blockages affecting food-handling areas,

– DA calls for proactive monitoring to prevent future service delivery failures.

Following an oversight by the Democratic Alliance (DA), the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality’s Environmental Health Services Department conducted an investigation on ongoing sewer blockages in Orkney.

The investigation was initiated after the DA identified a significant build-up of Fat, Oil and Grease (FOG) affecting the municipal sewer network in the area. These blockages have affected businesses operating in the food-handling sector, creating operational challenges and raising concerns about public health and service delivery. (See video).

The investigation confirmed that failures within the municipal sewer network on Charlotte Maxeke Street are contributing to these ongoing blockages.

We call on the municipality to urgently implement the necessary interventions to restore and maintain the affected sewer infrastructure.

The DA will continue to monitor the matter and hold the municipality accountable for ensuring reliable services, protecting public health, and maintaining essential infrastructure.

The DA remains committed to ensuring municipalities act proactively to prevent failures rather than responding only after communities are affected.
