The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply concerned by the shocking state of gravel roads in the Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality. Following an oversight visit on 22 September 2025, key routes connecting communities such as Ganyesa, Morokweng, Vorstershoop, Mokgopong, Werda, and Tosca, were inspected.
The inspection revealed that the Z390, D313, D974, D3530, and P68/2 roads are in a severely degraded and undriveable condition. Deep sandpits, erosion, large stones, and overgrown vegetation have made these roads unsafe, isolating residents and increasing the risk of accidents with free-roaming livestock and wildlife.
Strong and thriving communities cannot be built when they remain cut off from services, trade, and development due to collapsing infrastructure. The DA has written to the MEC for Public Works, Elizabeth Mokua, calling for:
- The urgent rehabilitation of these roads,
- Proper monitoring and enforcement of project specifications, and
- Improved control of vegetation and free-roaming animals along provincial routes.
In addition, the DA in Kagisano-Molopo has submitted written parliamentary questions to the MEC seeking clarity on contractor appointments, project timelines, budgets, and quality assurance measures particularly regarding the P68/2 Jakkalskop Road, where poor re-tarring has already led to loose gravel and grass growing through the surface.
The DA remains steadfast in holding the provincial government accountable for failing to maintain critical road infrastructure. Our residents deserve safe, reliable roads that connect them to opportunity not further neglect that traps them in isolation.
