The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Moretele is deeply concerned about the ongoing collapse of water supply and the poor quality of drinking water in the municipality. Despite being the designated water services authority, the municipality has consistently failed to meet the basic needs of residents.
Communities across Moretele regularly endure periods of up to seven days without running water. When water is eventually restored, it is often green or brown in colour, raising serious concerns about safety and quality.
The DA has also noted a rise in waterborne illnesses, which we believe is directly linked to poor water quality. This is unacceptable in a municipality that has partnered with Magalies Water, yet still fails to deliver clean and reliable water.
This failure is worsened by the municipality’s reliance on costly water tankers, which has created space for corruption and so-called “water mafias” to exploit the system, while residents are left without reliable supply. At the same time, vandalism and theft of taps continue unchecked, with little action taken to stop the neglect and criminal activity.
As the DA, we are demanding:
- Monthly water testing of all supply points,
- Full publication of water quality results on municipal platforms, and
- A credible plan to end the reliance on tankering and restore water through the reticulation system.
The people of Moretele cannot continue to live without a safe and reliable water supply. The ANC-run municipality must be held accountable. The DA will continue to apply pressure through oversight and by mobilising communities until every resident has access to clean, reliable water.
