The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Moretele Local Municipality (MLM) is deeply concerned about recent road paving developments implemented without the inclusion of proper stormwater drainage systems.

While we welcome infrastructure developments, the absence of adequate drainage systems has led to significant and unintended consequences for residents. Rainwater is not being effectively channelled, resulting in flooding that is increasingly directed into residential yards and homes. This has caused significant inconvenience and poses serious health and safety risks to the community (see photo hereherehere, and here).

Furthermore, due to the rural nature of the area, the situation is exacerbated by freely roaming livestock, particularly cattle. The accumulation of water and animal activity has led to muddy, unsafe, and difficult-to-navigate conditions. Road that were intended to improve accessibility have instead become hazardous for the community, especially for the elderly, children and persons living with disabilities.

Residents are calling on the MLM to urgently assess the situation and implement proper stormwater drainage solutions. Infrastructure projects must be holistic and sustainable, ensuring that they improve living conditions rather than compromise them.

The DA stands with the community and remains committed to engaging constructively with local authorities and find practical and lasting solutions.
