The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the North West Provincial Legislature welcomes the extension of the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) investigation into the North West Development Corporation (NWDC), as signed and approved by President Cyril Ramaphosa under Proclamation 270 of 2025.
With the investigations set to begin, the DA will write to the SIU to request a thorough investigation into recent appointments within all entities of the Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (DEDECT), given that the CFO of the North West Parks and Tourism Board (NWPTB) was appointed despite a pending criminal case and currently out on bail — none of which was disclosed during the appointment process.
The investigation’s newly broadened scope will now cover all contracts given to Tokiso Security Services CC, not only by the NWDC but also by all North West provincial departments, state agencies, and government-owned businesses.
In the long-running battle against systemic corruption and inadequate financial governance that have beset the NWDC and its related stakeholders, this is a crucial development.
The DA has long raised concerns about alleged irregularities within the NWDC, and within its DEDECT for years. Therefore, it is encouraging to see that the SIU has the authority to look into maladministration and procurement irregularities, recover lost funds, and refer people to criminal prosecution if necessary.
We urge the SIU to act swiftly, carry out a thorough investigation, and ensure no detail is missed. Additionally, the DA in the North West Legislature will monitor the investigation’s progress closely until it is finished and will demand that any recommendations from its findings be fully carried out.
The announcement of an investigation is not the end of our oversight role. We will continue to hold ANC-led provincial governments accountable and ensure that the findings of this investigation are not ignored and that those who committed wrongdoings are held accountable.
The people of the North West deserve clean, capable, and corruption-free. Though it needs to be followed by significant action, the expanded SIU probe is a positive step.
