- Matlosana’s ANC-majority Council leaves behind R12.5 billion in debt and a record of poor accountability,
- Court intervention was required to compel Council to act lawfully in relation to a criminally charged CFO,
- The DA stood firm in exposing governance failures, fraud and corruption and will continue fighting for a municipality that works for all.
With the final Council meeting of the current term in Matlosana held on 29 September 2026, the ANC-majority Council leaves behind a record of weak leadership, poor accountability and serious governance failures.
Over the past term, residents have witnessed weak leadership when strong leadership was needed most. When difficult decisions had to be made, the City of Matlosana Council, under an ANC majority, repeatedly hesitated, deflected or failed to act.
Residents have also seen poor accountability, where failures carried no consequences, oversight was treated as an inconvenience, and those responsible for governance were not held to the standards residents deserve.
Under the ANC-majority Council, Matlosana’s debt has ballooned to R12.5 billion, placing an enormous financial burden on the municipality and every ratepayer who calls the city home.
The municipality also reached a point where court orders were required to compel the ANC-majority Council to act lawfully in relation to a criminally charged CFO. The need for court intervention raises serious concerns about governance, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
As history records the failures of this term, the role played by the Democratic Alliance must also be recognised. The DA has consistently stood firm, raised concerns about governance failures, and played a decisive role in exposing fraud and corruption within the municipality.
Residents of Matlosana cannot afford another five years of the same approach to governance. After 30 years of ANC rule, residents deserve accountable government, functioning services and a municipality that protects public money.
A well-run municipality is also essential to creating an environment where businesses can invest, grow and create jobs. Matlosana needs a government that restores municipal capacity, protects residents’ money and gets the city working for all.
Residents of Matlosana must Vote DA on 4 November for a government that delivers reliable services, protects public money and creates opportunities for all. Vote DA to get Matlosana working for all.
