The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Matlosana is deeply disappointed by the reckless conduct of the ANC-led Council, which continues to shield the municipality’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Ms. Mercy Mpetla, from disciplinary action despite serious allegations of financial misconduct.

During a court appearance on 19 March 2025 in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court, involving an alleged R2.9 million payment to service provider Variegated (Pty) Ltd, the DA noted that several other charges of fraud and corruption are reportedly under investigation against the CFO, certain employees, and the service provider.

Following these reports, and in line with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), the DA wrote to the Executive Mayor and Municipal Manager requesting that Council table an item to initiate an internal disciplinary process within seven days. However, the ANC, led by Chief Whip Cllr. Rose Thabancho, blocked the process, arguing that there is “no evidence” to justify further investigation.

This response once again exposes the ANC’s culture of impunity and political protection, where accountability is sacrificed to protect cadres instead of serving residents.

The collapse of financial governance in Matlosana directly undermines service delivery and job creation. When funds are lost to corruption or mismanagement, residents are left without basic services, infrastructure remains broken, and the local economy suffers.

It is also disappointing that other opposition parties in Council, including the EFF, Patriotic Alliance, ACDP, and Forum 4 Service Delivery, once again voted with the ANC, choosing political expedience over accountability. The message to voters is clear: when these parties side with the ANC, corruption continues unchecked.

The DA stands firm in our fight against corruption, mismanagement, and political interference in Matlosana. In the upcoming elections, voters will have a clear choice, between a failing ANC coalition of corruption or a capable, transparent government under the DA that delivers real change.
