The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Naledi Local Municipality is deeply concerned about the growing safety and development challenges at Broedersput Housing Settlement, situated approximately 40 km between Vryburg and Delareyville.

During a recent oversight visit, DA Councillor Ald. John Adonis observed a dangerous situation for residents and commuters alike. The settlement currently lacks taxi ranks or transfer stations, forcing residents to hitchhike from the settlement’s entrance, dangerously located near a curve on the busy N14 national road. This exposes pedestrians and motorists to high accident risks. Urgent interventions, including safe pick-up points, improved signage, and traffic calming measures, are needed to prevent potential tragedies.

The risk is intensified by unfenced livestock grazing adjacent to the N14, increasing the likelihood of accidents and the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, which threatens all cattle farmers in the North West and neighbouring farms. The DA calls for coordinated action between municipal officials and the Department of Agriculture to regulate grazing, improve fencing, and implement disease management protocols.

Hon. Hendriëtte van Huyssteen, DA Member of the North West Provincial Legislature and Constituency Head for Naledi, has formally written to the Departments of Community Safety and Transport Management (COSATMA), Agriculture, and the Naledi Local Municipality, urging immediate action to protect residents and livestock. The DA remains committed to accountable governance and the safety of all communities, and will continue to press ANC-led governments to implement effective, sustainable solutions for Broedersput’s growing settlement.
