The Democratic Alliance in Greater Taung Local Municipality welcomes the breaking news on the imminent departure of ANC Mayor Tumisang Gaoraelwe.

The ANC has finally acceded and awoken to a long-standing call by the DA in Greater Taung to have the controversial, morally bankrupt, and irresponsible mayor removed.

The DA was the very first political party within the local municipality to table and sponsor a Motion of No Confidence on the discredited mayor in 2023.

We also went further by drafting and canvassing petitions to the office of the then MEC for COGTA and acting Premier Hon. Nono Maloyi to have him removed. Our efforts to salvage the already compromised image of our municipality and to put a halt to the wastage of municipal funds by the mayor through countless and reckless motor vehicle accidents went all in vain. This is due to the ANC’s abuse of their majority in council by preventing the delinquent mayor from being held accountable.

However, even though the ANC has not yet given any timelines on his final departure for fear of a political leadership vacuum, the dice have already been cast and a decision has been adopted by the ruling party that the mayor is on his way out.

We welcome this decision for the sake of the people of Greater Taung!
