- DA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Mme Motlalepule Sylvia Mosetlhi.
- Her testimony highlighted the devastating impact of prolonged sewer spillages on local communities.
- No resident should be forced to live in conditions that compromise their health, dignity, and safety.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Mme Motlalepule Sylvia Mosetlhi following her passing.
Mme Mosetlhi became known to many South Africans when she courageously shared her family’s experience of living alongside persistent sewer spillages during the National Council of Provinces’ Taking Parliament to the People programme in Stilfontein earlier this year. Her testimony put a human face to the daily hardships endured by many residents living in communities affected by failing municipal infrastructure.
While no link has been established between her passing and the conditions she described, her testimony served as a powerful reminder that no person should be expected to live in an environment affected by overflowing sewage, pollution and neglected basic services.
Access to a safe, healthy, and dignified living environment is a constitutional right. Municipalities have both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility to maintain critical infrastructure and ensure that residents receive reliable basic services that protect public health and uphold human dignity.
The DA remains concerned that many communities across Matlosana continue to experience recurring sewer spillages and infrastructure failures. Residents deserve permanent solutions, not temporary interventions after problems have reached crisis point.
The DA will continue to hold the municipality accountable for maintaining essential infrastructure, improving service delivery, and ensuring that no community is forced to endure conditions that place their health, safety, and dignity at risk.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mosetlhi family during this difficult time. May they find comfort and strength in the support of their loved ones and the memories of a woman whose voice helped draw attention to the daily struggles faced by so many residents.
