  • DA condemns the destruction of security infrastructure during the Matlosana Gardens protest.
  • Concerns of residents must be addressed through lawful engagement, not violence and intimidation.
  • DA calls on residents and management to urgently engage to resolve the ongoing dispute.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana strongly condemns the destruction and burning of security infrastructure during last night’s protest at Matlosana Gardens (see video here).

Residents have repeatedly raised concerns regarding alleged intimidation by the management company, particularly towards tenants who have fallen behind on rent. These allegations deserve to be heard and addressed through lawful and appropriate channels. No resident should feel ignored when raising legitimate concerns.

However, frustration can never justify violence, intimidation, or the destruction of property. Such actions place residents at risk, escalate tensions, and make it more difficult to achieve a lasting resolution.

The recurring disputes surrounding annual tariff increases and tenant grievances point to the need for constructive engagement between residents and management. The DA therefore calls on both parties to enter into an urgent, transparent and good-faith process to resolve these issues before the situation deteriorates further.

Those who claim to represent the interests of residents must demonstrate leadership by pursuing lawful solutions rather than encouraging actions that inflame conflict or damage property. Real leadership is measured by the ability to resolve disputes responsibly and in the interests of the wider community.

The DA believes communities deserve safe neighbourhoods, accountable property management, and disputes that are resolved through dialogue, not destruction. We will continue to advocate for lawful, peaceful engagement that protects both the rights of residents and the rule of law.
