The Democratic Alliance (DA) has secured a major victory for accountability and good governance in Rustenburg after Council adopted decisive corrective measures to fix years of financial non-compliance and mismanagement.

This breakthrough follows sustained DA pressure in the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) and Council after National Treasury warned that Rustenburg’s equitable share could be withheld under Section 216(2) of the Constitution due to persistent failures to comply with Section 32 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).

Under continued DA oversight, Council has now taken firm action to restore financial integrity, transparency, and consequence management in the municipality.

Key DA-Driven Reforms Adopted by Council:

  • Independent external auditors will be appointed to investigate and clear the backlog of irregular, unauthorised, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure cases dating back to 2010;
  • Internal Audit Unit must produce a quarterly compliance report on all Section 32 matters, to be submitted to both MPAC and Council; and
  • All resolutions and recommendations will be submitted to National Treasury, Provincial Treasury, and COGTA as proof of Council’s renewed commitment to clean and accountable governance — a DA-led initiative.

The DA will continue to lead the fight against corruption and financial mismanagement in Rustenburg. Where the DA leads oversight, accountability follows.

We will closely monitor the implementation of these resolutions to ensure that National Treasury sees measurable progress and that Rustenburg never again faces the risk of financial sanction due to ANC-led mismanagement.
