An article published in a Sunday newspaper on 20 April 2025 contained allegations against the Executive Mayor of Matlosana, Fikile Mahlophe, including unauthorised expenditure, spending without Council approval, ignoring supply chain processes, intervening in supply chain processes, purchasing furniture valued at R280,000 but priced at R15,000, and incurring R1.2 million in unauthorised debt.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) formally requested that the Speaker of Matlosana urgently institute an independent and thorough investigation into these serious allegations concerning unauthorised expenditure, misappropriation of public funds, and undue interference in municipal supply chain management processes in terms of the Code of Conduct for Councillors. (See letter here.)
These allegations, if proven true, not only undermine the principles of transparency and good governance but also compromise service delivery and the public’s trust in our Municipal leadership. The DA believes that such matters warrant immediate attention to preserve the integrity of the institution and ensure accountability.
It is critical that the Council fulfills its oversight responsibilities and demonstrates its commitment to ethical prudence.
The request for an urgent investigation reiterates the DA’s commitment to ethical governance, transparency, and accountability.
