The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality is urgently calling on the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Oageng Molapisi, to intervene after a violent shootout erupted at the municipal offices in Zeerust on the 25th of August 2025.

At approximately 05:45, residents of the Zeerust CBD were shaken awake by gunfire. The incident involved a violent confrontation between the municipality’s contracted security company, Fusion Tactical Security, and the bodyguards of Cllr Motshwaedi I.E. Moarabi, an expelled ANC councillor, who reportedly came to the municipal offices to cause disruption.

According to confirmed reports:

  • At least 27 shots were fired, including rifle rounds.
  • One bodyguard was shot in the leg and rushed to hospital.
  • Cartridge cases are scattered on the streets outside the municipal offices.
  • The gunfire came from outside into the municipal building during a shift change.

Police have cordoned off the building, which remained close as it was an active crime scene. (see photo here)

This violent escalation highlights the complete breakdown of governance and law and order at Ramotshere Moiloa Municipality. Residents continue to suffer as political infighting and instability take precedence over essential service delivery.

The DA will continue to pressure CoGTA and law enforcement to restore order, ensure accountability, and protect residents from further harm.
