The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West demands that Premier Lazarus Mokgosi’s upcoming State of the Province Address (SOPA) focus solely on three urgent priorities: jobs, infrastructure development, and safety. Anything less will be yet another betrayal of the people of North West, who have endured years of economic decline, crumbling infrastructure, and rising crime under the failing ANC provincial government.
The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey statistics for Q4 of 2024 paint a devastating picture: North West now has the highest unemployment rate in the country, with 20,000 jobs lost in just three months. This is a direct result of the provincial government’s failure to create an environment encouraging investment and job creation. The Premier must use his SOPA to outline immediate, practical solutions to reverse this crisis.
For over a year, the ANC-led government has spoken about so-called investment drives, yet residents have seen no meaningful economic improvements. Investors will not come to a province where the roads are collapsing, the power supply is unreliable, and crime is out of control. Without proper infrastructure, businesses cannot operate, and new job opportunities will remain a pipe dream.
The recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding in Mahikeng, Klerksdorp, and other towns further exposed the government’s failure to maintain even the most basic infrastructure. The absence of stormwater drainage systems and proper maintenance of roads, bridges, and public buildings has left communities vulnerable to disaster. The DA demands a clear, time-bound commitment from Premier Mokgosi to overhaul North West’s failing infrastructure.
The lack of provincial community safety initiatives in the province is alarming, as evident in the growing presence of crime syndicates, recently witnessed in Stilfontein. To spur economic growth, Premier Mokgosi must introduce innovative safety measures that complement SAPS efforts, ensuring a secure environment for businesses and residents to thrive.
The people of North West are tired of empty promises. The DA will not stand by while the ANC government continues to fail them. Premier Mokgosi must deliver more than just words—he must provide real solutions with clear timelines and accountability measures.
The DA will closely scrutinize the Premier’s SOPA and ensure that his government is held accountable for every promise made. We remain committed to fighting for a province where jobs are created, infrastructure is maintained, and residents feel safe.
