The DA in the North West Provincial Legislature conducted an oversight inspection of the Piet Plessis Sports Facility in the Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality and found the multi-disciplinary facility to be incomplete and deserted.

This is despite the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture allegedly budgeting R1,5 million towards the first phase of the Piet Plessis Sports Facility with a completion date which was set in 2018.

The abandoned sports facility is nothing but an open space with no signs of a sports ground. The exposed holes in the ground are filled with water and pose a risk to any person who would like to practice sports. Last year, a child fell into one of these holes and suffered serious injuries. See images here, here, and here.

The ANC government and the department have not made any attempt to complete the construction of the sports facility. Instead, ANC politicians and cadres continue to ride on the backs of tax-paying residents, enriching themselves with money meant to develop North West communities.

The DA will write to the North West MEC for Sports, Arts, and Culture, Keneetswe Mosenogi, asking for a thorough report on the sports facility project, the overall cost of the project and the money spent, and the estimated completion date for the facility.

The ANC-governed North West stands in stark contrast with the DA-governed Western Cape where community projects are being prioritised and brought to completion rather than abandoning them.

People have an opportunity in next year’s election to rebuild what the ANC has destroyed by voting DA, a government that cares and gets things done.
