– Years of failed promises have left Block H Phase 3 residents without electricity,
– Delays have forced many households to rely on dangerous illegal electricity connections and sparked community protests,
– The DA will ensure Madibeng delivers on its R29.7 million commitment and accounts for every cent spent.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) condemns Madibeng Local Municipality’s continued failure to provide electricity to residents of Block H Phase 3 informal settlement in Letlhabile, Ward 38, after years of delays and unfulfilled commitments.
Block H Phase 3 has existed since 2016, yet hundreds of households remain without legal electricity despite repeated engagements with Madibeng Local Municipality.
The municipality’s failure to deliver basic services has forced many residents to rely on illegal electricity connections, exposing families to serious safety risks. This is not a sustainable solution and reflects years of poor planning and a lack of urgency from the municipality.
Frustration over these ongoing failures led residents to protest on the morning of 29 June 2026 (See photos here, here, here and here). The protest was monitored by Public Order Police, who dispersed crowds after tensions escalated. Several rubber bullets were fired, leaving more than five residents treated for injuries at Letlhabile Clinic.
This incident is another indication of growing frustration among residents over the ANC-led municipality’s failure to respond to legitimate community concerns.
While we understand the frustration, the DA rejects resorting to violence. Communities have a right to protest but such protest action must be peaceful and take place within the framework of the law.
Following the protest, the municipality announced that R29.7 million had been allocated to provide electricity to 1,320 households in Block H Phase 3. The municipality further indicated that it would advertise the position of Community Liaison Officer from next Monday, after which the process to appoint a contractor would commence.
The DA will closely monitor the implementation of this project, including the appointment of a contractor, to ensure that the funds are protected and that electricity is delivered without unnecessary delays.
Residents of Madibeng have the power to bring about change by ensuring they are registered to vote and making their voices heard on 4 November 2026. The DA remains committed to delivering accountable governance, transparent leadership, and quality service delivery for all residents.
