As the Executive Mayor launches October Transport Month 2025 under the theme “Promoting Safer Roads and Better Transport for All,” the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Rustenburg calls for urgent and practical interventions to address the growing safety crisis on the R510 between Rustenburg CBD and Kanana traffic circle.

Over the past months, the R510 has tragically become known as a killer road, claiming the lives of numerous pedestrians and motorists. The lack of functioning streetlights, rampant drunk driving, and poor enforcement have turned this vital transport corridor into a danger zone.

While the DA supports initiatives promoting safer roads, awareness campaigns alone will not save lives. We call for:

  • Immediate repair and restoration of streetlights and road markings,
  • Increased deployment of traffic officers to curb drunk and negligent driving, and
  • Dedicated funding to maintain critical transport infrastructure.

Furthermore, the DA notes with concern the slow progress in the construction of Yarona Bus Stations along the R510. These stations are vital to improving passenger mobility, enhancing public transport reliability, and affordability for commuters alike.

The DA urges the Rustenburg Local Municipality and all stakeholders to act decisively. A safer and better-connected Rustenburg will only be possible when plans and promises are replaced with action and accountability.
