The Democratic Alliance (DA) is compelled to address the dire human rights situation unfolding in the North West Province under the faltering grip of African National Congress (ANC) governance. The decay of basic services, the erosion of dignity, and the neglect of our people’s fundamental rights have reached intolerable levels.

The government’s neglect undermines its constitutional duty to uphold human rights. The North West’s municipalities, once the backbone of local governance, are either dysfunctional or on the brink of collapse. This is not mere administrative failure—it is a betrayal of the people’s trust and a direct assault on their rights to dignified living conditions. Unemployment soars, poverty deepens, and the ANC’s empty promises echo through communities abandoned by those elected to serve them.

But the story does not end in despair. The DA stands ready to turn the tide. Where the ANC has sown neglect, we plant hope. Our proven track record of governance—seen in the Western Cape and in municipalities where we lead—demonstrates that the DA can deliver clean water, functional clinics, and quality education. We bring not just critique but solutions: transparent budgets, skilled leadership, and a relentless focus on the people’s needs.

The DA envisions a province where every citizen has access to the opportunities and services they deserve, a province rebuilt on the principles of fairness, freedom, and dignity.

As we observe Human Rights Day on 21 March 2025, the DA highlights the appalling conditions faced by North West residents. Communities in Ditsobotla, Taung, Matlosana, and JB Marks are plagued by dry taps, daily sewer spills, pothole-ridden roads, and relentless power outages. Even healthcare facilities are unsafe—patients at the Potchefstroom CBD Clinic endure exposure to toxic fumes from burning waste, a blatant violation of their rights. Meanwhile, delays or non-payments to NPOs such as the Marthie du Plessis Centre further erode support for vulnerable communities.

Billions have been squandered through irregular expenditures, while citizens are left with collapsing services and a deteriorating quality of life.

The people of North West deserve better. The DA envisions a province where every citizen has access to the opportunities and services they deserve—a province rebuilt on the principles of fairness, freedom, and dignity.

The decay of ANC rule is not the final chapter. Together, we can reclaim our province from the ashes of mismanagement and build a future where human rights are not just promises, but realities.

Today, the DA renews the call to the people of the North West: join us in this fight for justice and renewal. The Bill of Rights belongs to every South African, and we will not rest until it is upheld in everyday life.

The time for change is now. Together, we can fulfill the promise of 1994.
