The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Rustenburg applauds the intervention of the office of the Deputy Minister, Sello Seitlholo, and Magalies Water in addressing the persistent water crisis in Phatsima. Their efforts to restore water supply, particularly to high-lying areas, and to repair leaking water chambers, have significantly improved the lives of residents.
For years, the people of Phatsima endured severe water shortages, with many forced to share water sources with animals or wash at leaking water chambers—an undignified and unhealthy situation. Thanks to recent repairs and infrastructure maintenance, water is now flowing consistently, restoring a sense of normalcy and dignity to the community.
While this intervention marks a positive step forward, it does not erase the prolonged suffering endured by the residents of Phatsima due to the failure to deliver a basic human right. The DA remains committed to holding those responsible accountable.
The DA is also awaiting a report on the case lodged with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). The DA firmly believes that the right to water, as enshrined in the Constitution, must be respected, and accountability must follow where rights have been neglected.
The SAHRC complaint will highlight the years of neglect, the health risks posed to residents, and the urgent need for systemic changes to prevent future crises. While we welcome the recent progress, we cannot ignore the fact that it took years of suffering, community outcry, and political intervention before action was taken.
The DA will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure that the water supply remains consistent, infrastructure is maintained, and no community is left behind. This includes advocating for future infrastructure upgrades and sustainable water management practices to safeguard against future challenges.
The restoration of water in Phatsima is a victory for the community, but the journey toward full accountability and sustainable service delivery is far from over. The DA will continue to stand with the people of Phatsima, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights upheld.
