The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the North West will submit written questions to Premier Lazarus Mokgosi, requesting the release of complete and detailed vetting reports on all senior management appointments across provincial entities. This follows the arrest of former North West Development Corporation (NWDC) CFO Kudakwashe Mpofu, who was appointed despite allegedly using fraudulent documentation.
While MEC Bitsa Lenkopane may welcome Mpofu’s arrest, this does not absolve her or her department of responsibility. His appointment was a direct result of Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism’s (DEDECT’s) failed leadership, weak vetting processes, and poor governance. The appointment of foreign nationals with fraudulent credentials to key government positions is not just unlawful but poses a serious economic and national security risk.
This is not an isolated incident—provincial entities under DEDECT’s oversight are plagued by instability and mismanagement. Multiple entities have collapsed under the department due to a lack of oversight and accountability.
The DA will push for urgent accountability from the MEC, Acting HOD, and NWDC Board before the Portfolio Committee. Serious questions remain unanswered: Who verified Mpofu’s qualifications and citizenship before his appointment? What due diligence was conducted before entrusting him with public funds? What actions have been taken against those responsible for this irregular appointment, and what measures are in place to recover the lost funds?
The people of North West deserve a government that prioritises service delivery over political patronage. The DA will continue to fight for transparency, accountability, and good governance.
