The DA in Mahikeng Local Municipality will, through its Member of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hendriette van Huyssteen, write to the MEC of Social Development, Sussana Dantjie, to urgently assist Ellen Moncho from Mahikeng with a wheelchair.

The 88-year-old woman from Tshunyane village in Ward 26 was raped in 2019, whereafter she never walked again. The Lomanyaneng Police Station made no progress on this case.

The DA recently visited Ms. Moncho only to find her crawling on her hands and knees to get by. This heartbreaking scene has been playing off for the past five years, with no assistance from the ward councillor or the social worker allocated to this area.

The health and social issues in this village are not limited to Ms. Moncho. Her son has also been struggling for years to apply for a disability grant, to name one of many. The DA calls on the Departments of Social Development and Health to urgently assist these residents with the necessary medical and social care.

It is a disgrace for people in power to be aware of such a tragedy only to sit back in the comfort of their homes and do nothing. The DA is committed to fighting for the humanity of residents to be upheld, and we will continue to call out the effects that the dereliction of duty of state entities is having on the people of Mahikeng.
