The DA in the Rustenburg Local Municipality has written to the Executive Mayor, Cllr Shiela Mabale Huma, requesting her to urgently engage with the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, seeking intervention to ensure a sustainable water future for Rustenburg.

Rustenburg residents have been suffering from water shortages and supply interruptions for years due to leaking pipes and dilapidated water reticulation infrastructure. The bulk infrastructure also lacks the capacity to meet water supply needs due to increased demand because of population growth. Ensuring a sustainable water future for Rustenburg will require additional funding and the municipality alone cannot afford the investment required.

Water is a fundamental resource that supports economic growth, livelihoods, and the well-being of residents.

The DA proposes the following actions with assistance from the Department of Water and Sanitation to tackle Rustenburg’s water supply problems:

• Water Infrastructure Upgrades: Advocate for increased funding from the National Government to upgrade and modernize bulk water infrastructure. This includes repairing and expanding water treatment plants, improving the water reticulation network, and implementing water conservation measures;

• Water Resource Management: Work with national authorities to develop a comprehensive water resource management plan that ensures sustainable water use, protect our natural fresh water resources, and promote efficient water management practices;

• Alternative Water Sources: Explore alternative water sources, such as demineralization of acid mine drainage, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater recycling, to supplement the existing supply. Diversifying water sources will ensure a more resilient water supply;

• Public Awareness and Education: Launch public education campaigns to promote a culture of water consciousness amongst residents towards improved water conservation and responsible water use; and

• Collaboration with Stakeholders: Engage with local businesses, community organizations, and academic institutions to develop partnerships and innovative water management solutions. Water supply issues can be more effectively addressed if we pool the combined skills and resources of all stakeholders.

The DA urges Mayor Huma to act swiftly and decisively since her leadership and advocacy is crucial in securing the necessary support and resources from the National Government.

Failure to solve these issues will have serious ramifications on Rustenburg’s economic and residential development. Businesses may struggle to operate, investments may be deterred, and the quality of life of residents will deteriorate. This cannot be allowed to happen.

The DA will continue to apply pressure on the municipality to ensure residents receive the services to which they are constitutionally entitled.
