Note to Editors: Find attached a soundbite in English by Cllr Nelio Nhacuangue, DA Councillor: Rustenburg Local Municipality
The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes Rustenburg Local Municipality’s intervention to restore bulk water services by upgrading the Tlhabane water pump station.
The DA applied pressure on the municipality to address the ongoing water cuts that plague residents and to improve the quality of clean water so that it is safe for residents to consume.
For the past four years, residents of Tlhabane West and Geelhoutpark experienced severe water cuts that lasted weeks and sometimes months.
Under a DA-led government, the people of Tlhabane West and Geelhoutpark would not have been forced to wait more than four years to receive access to clean water.
The DA also reported the municipality to the South African Human Rights Commission for its failure to ensure that residents have access to clean water.
The water challenges were primarily due to dilapidated and outdated water infrastructure, lack of personnel with the requisite skills and knowledge to maintain equipment, and the non-existent controls to manage water consumption and limit wastage caused by leaks and other contributing factors.
The upgrade of the pump station is a first step towards restoring the rights and dignity of the people of Tlhabane West and Geelhoutpark.
The DA will closely monitor the upgrades of the Tlhabane pump station so that the project can be completed as soon as possible. We will continue to apply pressure on the Rustenburg Municipality to deliver the services all residents are entitled to.
A DA government in Rustenburg will always prioritise the needs of residents through quality service delivery. The people of Rustenburg should take back control of their municipality by voting for a DA-led government in the upcoming elections.
