The Democratic Alliance (DA) wrote to the Rustenburg Municipal Manager, Victor Makona, urging him to commit to an implementable plan to repair the terrible state of roads and infrastructure in the municipality, a situation made worse due to further damage caused by the recent heavy rains.

Due to neglect and poor maintenance, roads in Rustenburg could not withstand the heavy rains. Some roads have washed away in sections, while the damage to pothole-ridden roads has now become untravellable risking the safety of motorists. See the photos here, here, here and here.

The poorly maintained roads network negatively affects the ability of people to travel within residential areas, while businesses have threatened to disinvest from Rustenburg as they are unable to effectively transport goods and services. This will result in further job losses and the desolation of our business districts.

The DA can now report that the Municipal Manager has indeed responded to our letter, committing to a series of interventions with timeframes to rehabilitate damaged roads.  See the attached letter.

The Municipal Manager assured the DA that the road infrastructure damage will be addressed as soon as the rains subside.

The DA will continue to monitor the performance of the Municipal Manager’s undertaking to ensure that he follows through on his promises.
