The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana expresses serious concern over the municipality’s continued failure to rectify inaccurate and inflated municipal accounts, despite repeated assurances that the problem would be resolved following the appointment of new meter readers.

Residents were assured that the billing crisis would be resolved, that estimated and incorrect readings would be rectified, and that municipal accounts would accurately reflect actual consumption. However, months later, residents across the municipality continue to receive accounts that are exceptionally high, clearly incorrect, and completely unaffordable.

This ongoing failure is not only placing households under severe financial strain, but it is also eroding public trust in the municipality’s financial management systems. For many residents, these incorrect accounts have become the norm rather than the exception, with no meaningful intervention or accountability from the administration.

The DA believes that this situation reflects a broader breakdown in municipal governance and financial administration. A municipality that cannot bill residents accurately cannot expect a sustainable revenue stream, nor can it demand compliance from residents who are being unfairly charged.

In line with the City of Matlosana policy, the DA calls for:

  1. Immediate and transparent correction of all incorrect municipal accounts;
  2. A full audit of the billing system and meter-reading processes;
  3. Clear communication with residents on how their accounts are calculated and corrected; and
  4. Consequence management for officials and service providers who have failed, time and again, to deliver credible and fair billing.

The DA maintains that accountability is non-negotiable. Where officials or contractors are unable or unwilling to perform their duties competently, decisive action must be taken. Residents should not be expected to pay for administrative incompetence and broken systems.

Municipal services must be professional, efficient, and in the best interests of the community. Until the billing crisis is resolved and accountability is enforced, the DA will continue to fight on behalf of residents for fairness, transparency, and sound financial management in Matlosana.
