The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes with concern the widespread placement of political advertising on municipal street-light poles across Rustenburg ahead of the ANC’s January 8 celebrations (see photos here, here, here, and here).

Municipal by-laws are clear that advertising on public infrastructure requires prior written authorisation and the payment of prescribed fees. These rules apply equally to all organisations and political parties, regardless of political affiliation.

As this is not an election period, residents are entitled to assurance that municipal by-laws are being applied fairly, consistently and without preferential treatment for the governing party.

The DA has formally written to the Municipal Manager of Rustenburg Local Municipality requesting confirmation on whether the ANC applied for and received the required approvals, and whether the prescribed fees for the use of municipal infrastructure were paid (see letter attached). In the interest of transparency and good governance, the DA has further requested that proof of payment be made public.

The Democratic Alliance will continue to champion accountability, fairness, and equal treatment under the law. No political party, including the governing party, should be allowed to bypass municipal by-laws or misuse public infrastructure for partisan purposes.
