The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mahikeng is deeply disturbed by the shocking state of neglect at municipal cemeteries in Mmabana, Mahikeng, Danville, and Matlalong.

What were once sacred resting places have now fallen into vandalism, decay, and disrespect. Tombstones lie broken, fences have collapsed, and vagrants are living among the graves of loved ones (see photos here, here, here, and here). The total absence of security, maintenance, and oversight reflects a municipality that has abandoned its duty of care and respect not only for the deceased, but also for the families who still visit them.

The DA calls on the Mahikeng Local Municipality to urgently:

  • Repair fencing and basic infrastructure at all cemeteries;
  • Restore and secure guardrooms to ensure 24-hour protection;
  • Deploy cleaning teams for ongoing maintenance and dignity;
  • Fix and maintain sanitation facilities at Matlalong Cemetery; and
  • Strengthen monitoring and consequence management to prevent vandalism and theft.

The DA has formally requested that the relevant municipal directorates table a progress report to Council within 30 days, outlining the actions taken and clear timeframes for full restoration (see letter here). Should the municipality fail to act, the DA will escalate the matter to the Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance for investigation and intervention in terms of Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act.

Cemeteries are not mere plots of land, they are sacred spaces that hold the memories of those who built this community. Their neglect is a moral failure and a violation of basic human dignity.

The DA will continue to fight for a municipality that honours both the living and the departed.
