The Democratic Alliance in Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality urgently calls on the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) to intervene in the ongoing political instability immobilising the municipality.
For weeks, service delivery has ground to a halt as a result of violent ANC factional battles spilling into the municipality. On several occasions, the institution has been forced to shut its doors, leaving both officials and residents stranded.
On 25 July 2025, the Municipal Manager, Mr L. Mokgatlhe, instructed all municipal staff to vacate their offices by 11:00, citing security risks linked to political instability. (see letter here)
On 5 August 2025 and again on 7 August 2025, municipal operations were suspended for the same reason. (see letters here and here)
The situation in Council chambers is equally dire. The Ordinary Council meeting of 31 July 2025 collapsed after ANC infighting turned disruptive, forcing the Speaker to adjourn proceedings.
The reconvened meeting of 5 August 2025 again could not sit, despite police presence to maintain order.
On 14 August 2025, Council collapsed once more as ANC factions clashed in chambers, leaving governance paralysed.
These repeated disruptions expose the depth of ANC dysfunction and its complete disregard for the residents of Ramotshere Moiloa. While ANC councillors fight among themselves, critical decisions affecting water, electricity, infrastructure, and basic service delivery are left unattended.
The DA reiterates:
- The ANC must resolve its internal battles outside of Council chambers.
- CoGTA must act without delay to restore stability, ensure the functionality of the municipality, and protect service delivery to residents.
The people of Ramotshere Moiloa deserve governance that works for them – not political theatre that holds them hostage.
