The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana is alarmed by ongoing reports of residents being cut off from water and electricity without proper notice. In many cases, the only explanation given has been: “It looked like an illegal connection.”

While the DA supports lawful action against electricity and water theft, these actions must follow the Constitution, the Municipal Systems Act, council policies, and the principles of procedural fairness. No resident should lose essential services without clear evidence, proper investigation, and written communication.

The assumption of wrongdoing, without proof, is not a lawful reason to disconnect vital services. These actions damage public trust and reveal serious failures in administration and accountability.

The DA calls on the Matlosana Municipality to:

  1. Immediately stop all disconnections done without verified proof.
  2. Implement a clear verification process, including photographic or technical evidence and signed inspection reports.
  3. Provide written notice with reasons, timelines, and ways for residents to challenge or fix alleged problems.
  4. Restore services where disconnections were unfairly carried out.

Good governance means following the law, respecting residents’ rights, and applying anti-theft measures fairly. Arbitrary decisions must be replaced with professionalism, transparency, and fairness.

The DA will keep fighting for a well-run municipality that delivers reliable services, respects residents’ dignity, and holds officials accountable.
