The DA in Matlosana is calling on the Municipality to urgently repair the growing number of broken traffic lights that are creating dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians. The continued failure to fix these traffic lights leads to more near-misses and accidents, especially at busy intersections.

The continued issues with the traffic lights are not only frustrating but also endangering lives. Drivers are unsure how to proceed, and pedestrians are left vulnerable while crossing roads. To make matters worse, many of these crossings lack road markings.

Without immediate action, more serious incidents are inevitable. For example, a traffic light at one of the most dangerous crossings on the N12 has been out of order for more than a year, briefly working for a week before failing again.

During an oversight conducted by the DA this week, it was found that out of 57 traffic lights checked, only 28 were working correctly, while 24 were completely out of order. This is less than 50 percent of traffic lights in working order and highlights the ANC-led City of Matlosana and the Electrical Department’s disregard for the safety of our motorists and pedestrians.

The DA is urging the city to prioritize the repair of traffic lights, particularly at high-risk intersections. Immediate intervention is needed to restore normal traffic control, reduce the risk of accidents, and ensure pedestrian safety.

The DA urges the Executive Mayor, the relevant MMC, and the Director of the Electrical Department, to establish a plan of action. Lives are at risk, and this cannot be ignored any longer.
