The Democratic Alliance in Matlosana notes the appointment of Councillor Fikile Mahlophe of the ANC as Executive Mayor during a special council meeting held on Thursday, 11 July 2024.

Mayor Mahlophe will inherit a city with a staggering list of service delivery issues, as well as other challenges confronting our city, such as:

  • Extensive water loss.
  • Road infrastructure backlogs, potholes, and the tarring of gravel roads remain critical issues causing damage to vehicles and posing risks to drivers and pedestrians alike.
  • Outstanding disciplinary proceedings against those found to be in contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and relevant regulations.
  • Excessive wage bill.
  • Poor audit outcomes.
  • Street light outages.
  • Sewer challenges affecting the health and dignity of the residents.
  • Inconsistent refuse removal has led to illegal dumping sites, posing a health hazard.
  • Overgrown grass creating a fire hazard.

We urge the newly elected Mayor to address all these shortcomings with an intensified focus on fighting corruption.

The Democratic Alliance will be vigilant, and we will not hesitate to call out failures and demand accountability. Our city deserves better. Our people deserve a functioning, responsive government that delivers on its promises.
