The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has 357 employed municipal general workers who are failing to respond to service delivery problems.
These workers draw a salary of R8,500.00 per month, yet general workers can be seen hanging out and even sleeping at local shops and vendors while Matlosana’s streetlights are broken, sewage is flowing down the streets, pavements are overgrown, garbage does not get collected, and the streets are full of potholes. These general workers also regularly claim overtime.
The City of Matlosana is technically bankrupt and cannot deliver even the most basic services. Not to mention the lack of resources and equipment these workers would need to execute their responsibilities.
Matlosana owes Eskom R2 billion and Midvaal Water Board R1.6 billion for bulk electricity and water supply. The city lost R1 billion during the 2022/23 financial year as revealed by the Auditor-General while its liabilities exceeded its assets by almost R2,7 billion. It is amazing how millions could be found to pay ANC cadres, but not to service the Eskom bulk electricity debt.
The DA will through our Caucus Leader in the North West Legislature, Freddy Sonakile MPL, write to the MEC of CoGHSTA, Nono Maloyi, requesting his urgent intervention to ensure Matlosana has enough resources to effectively respond to service delivery complaints.
A DA government will prioritise the funding of municipal resources to ensure quality services are delivered to communities. A vote for the DA on 29 May this year is a vote for better services.
