The Democratic Alliance (DA) will lay charges with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) against the Mahikeng Local Municipality (MLM) for gross negligence following the fatal electrocution of ten-year old Hlompho Thika on Friday, 14 January 2022.

The DA was informed by the management of the Iqra School that the incident occurred outside the school premises where the school girl touched a streetlight pole with loose live wires (see picture here).

It was further stated that the incident was immediately reported to Eskom where the matter was referred to the Municipality.

The loose live wires have on several occasions been reported to Eskom and the Municipality, however both refused to take responsibility for the fault. Had the necessary action been taken when reported, the death of an innocent young girl could have been prevented.

It has become the norm that electricity infrastructure in and around Mahikeng are not being maintained, leaving all residents vulnerable to tragic accidents.

The DA will write to the Municipal Manager, Mike Mokgwamme, to request an extensive survey of all electrical poles and to ensure that repairs are prioritised.

The DA conveys its deepest condolences and support to the family and friends of the victim and hope that they will find comfort during this difficult time.
