The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West would like to wish the Matrics of 2020 all the very best as they begin their final examination.

This year has been a very difficult year for all of us, brought on by the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic to our shores.

The hard lockdown and the disruption to education has a major impact on learners in all grades, but especially more so on Grade 7 and Matric Learners.

We know what a difficult year this has been, but we also know that teachers and learners did all that they could to prepare for these final exams. It involved many hours of online and self-study.

Those sitting for their exams now have taken the first brave step into an adult future. Your dedication must be commended and appreciated.

For many others, the impact of the Coronavirus and the lockdown on their personal circumstances have had a very dramatic impact on their education and preparedness for exams. To these learners, we would like to say that it is not your fault and that we understand, and that we will continue to support you. If you are unable to write this year, there is always next year.

It is unfortunate that on the eve of examinations, especially considering the impact of Covid-19, that four schools in Moruleng North West were burnt in what appears to be deliberate arson attacks.

The DA condemns these arson attacks in the strongest possible terms. It really is an onslaught against learners who want to empower themselves, to be armed with knowledge, in preparation for a prosperous and successful adult life.

Despite these challenges, the DA acknowledges each and every learner and matriculant for their efforts and sacrifices they have had to make this year. We salute you. You are all heroes.
